1863

The Civil War began over slavery.

1865

President Abraham Lincoln freed slaves in the south and the Civil War ended. 4 million African Americans were liberated.

1863-1867

Black Codes were instituted by Southern States limiting African American freedom, freedom of movement, freedom to economic progress led to ensure cheap labor.

Under the Black Codes the idea of reconstruction was undermined. Example of a Black Code is Black person who refuses to sign a labor contract could be arrested, fined and forced to work for free. Black Codes made it easier for Black Americans to be incarcerated.

1865

The 13th Amendment was ratified and passed into law, abolishing slavery for all in the US. However, exceptions were written into this Amendment allowing for slavery to exist if persons were incarcerated or

punished for a crime. While incarcerated, prisoners could be sold into slavery for free labor to plantation owners. As this amendment was being written, the Black Codes were put in place and acted on.

1865-1877

After the Civil War Reconstruction began, designed to give former slaves a helping hand to start a new life after slavery, services were put in place to help African Americans move on. Still unable to read and write they were to receive 40 acres and a mule. The majority didn’t know of this offer and never received it. Reconstruction lasted 10 years.

1866

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution was passed by congress and gave all people born in the US citizenship, equal civil and legal rights under the law.

1870

The 15th Amendment was adopted into the U.S. constitution, which gave men the right to vote no matter what color, race or creed. However, Southern states established laws, rules and regulations for voting that restricted Black participation in ways that didn’t mention race. A group called the Ku Klux Klan used violence, fraud and other means to restrict Black participation in voting.

1971

Nixon declares ‘War on Drugs’ and drug abuse is to be “public enemy number one” but, black and brown people are impacted much more than white people by drug enforcement and sentencing practices. Rates of drug use and sales are similar across racial and ethnic lines, but Black and Latin people are far more likely than white people to be stopped, searched, arrested, convicted, harshly sentenced, and saddled with a lifelong criminal record.
